Safe use of diisocyanates

On 4 August 2020, the European Union (EU) published new regulations in relation to the handling of products containing diisocyanates. The regulations will come into force from August 2023 with the aim of preventing skin and breathing sensitisation associated with the inappropriate use of polyurethane foams.

What are diisocyanates and why are they considered dangerous?

Diisocyanates are chemical substances used in the manufacturing of polyurethane foams, present in a large range of products, from furniture and mattresses to construction products. Although these foams are widely used due to their versatility and insulating properties, it has been observed that inappropriate handling can lead to allergic reactions in the skin and breathing problems in the workers exposed to them.

How can you guarantee safe work with diisocyanates?

With a view to protecting the health and safety of workers and reducing the risks associated with the handling of products containing diisocyanates, these new EU regulations establish a series of measures. These measures include strict requirements for the training of workers as well as the implementation of control measures in the workplace, such as appropriate ventilation and the use of personal protection equipment.

Additionally, the regulations also establish the obligation for manufacturers and suppliers of products containing diisocyanates to provide clear, detailed information on the associated risks, as well as precise instructions on their safe handling. Likewise, the replacement of hazardous substances with safer alternatives wherever possible will be promoted.

These new regulations form part of the EU's efforts to improve the protection of workers and guarantee safety in the workplace. What should distributors do?

The regulations require people who handle polyurethane foams to carry out specific training, but do not require this of people who do not come into direct contact with the product (such as salespeople).

Distributors have the responsibility of informing users regarding the regulations and encouraging them to take the course, in order to collaborate in the implementation of these safety measures to minimise the risks and promote a healthier working environment.
